A screening of two films by María Ruido, placing one of Ruido’s earliest works in dialogue with one of her most recent.
The Inner Memory (2002, 33 mins)
This work, the result of a trip to Germany (taken in December of 2000) and of a personal investigation lasting over two years, tackles the construction of memory and the mechanisms of the production of history. It explores the experience of the artists’ parents as “Gastarbeiter”. The Inner Memory underscores the significance of the body as a territory of memory and absence, and as a political agent. The politics of migration from the Spanish state in the sixties and seventies is treated as a form of biopolitics and of control of workers. This is a video about the retrieval of these bodies and their work.
The Rules of the Game (2022, 41 mins)
The Rules of the Game is a conversation-performance in sequence shot between the writer and activist Brigitte Vasallo and the artist, filmmaker and researcher María Ruido, about trans-class experience, institutional violence, and class and gender performativity. The conversation starts from the idea that being trans-class involves not only a shift of economic and social conditions, but also submission to forms of normativity that blind us, block our subjective transformations, and expropriate things that are rightfully ours. Gesture and language are forced into another mode of performativity, that of the social positions we are now meant to occupy.

Anna R. Winder (*1995, Aarhus) is an artist, writer, librarian, and publisher. She is part of the b_books collective, which runs a bookshop and a publishing house, and is the librarian at the ICI Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry. Together with Elbe Trakal, she is the founding co-editor of Fat Vampire Press. She lives and works in Berlin.
